Takoma Park Therapist - substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and trauma

James "Jay" Hardin therapist

Hello!  I'm Jay Hardin and I have over 20 years of experience as a therapist and licensed clinical social worker. I have worked extensively with adults and young adults struggling with substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and the after-effects of trauma. These issues reverberate through partners and families, and I have helped individuals, couples, and parents improve their relationships despite these challenges. In addition to my LCSW license, I am a certified Master Addictions Counselor. For over five years I led the substance abuse services at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where I provided care to active duty military, retirees, and their dependents - including junior and senior enlisted personnel, officers, flag officers, and members of Congress.  I have also worked in schools, hospitals, and private practice, including over three years as a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) provider and trainer.  I live in Takoma Park with my wife of 17 years, our three kids, and two dogs.

How can therapy help?

Substance Abuse and Addiction

Substance Abuse and Addiction

Substance Abuse and Addiction

Are you questioning the role of alcohol or drugs in your life or the life of a loved one? Often we try to address mental health issues while avoiding discussing alcohol, drugs, or other addictive behaviors. Or, we try to address addictive behaviors without really dealing with causative issues like anxiety, depression, or past trauma. The truth is, we need to address both simultaneously to make real progress. Therapy can help identify triggers and remove obstacles getting in the way of sobriety. Therapy for family members can provide needed emotional support, improve relationships, and help change family dynamics which may be obstructing progress.

Trauma and PTSD

Whether it's combat trauma, sexual trauma, or other post traumatic stress, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy techniques, exposure therapies, and mindfulness techniques can profoundly lessen the impact of trauma on our experience of the world.  Therapy helps clients move past their trauma and regain peace of mind.

Depression and Anxiety

Depression and Anxiety

Many suffer from depression, anxiety, or other mood disorders which can range from merely annoying to debilitating.  Sometimes therapy alone can be the answer.  Other times combining therapy with medications provides better outcomes.  I can help clients determine what they need and work toward feeling better.

Therapy is Personal

An eclectic approach

Dialectical Behavioral Informed Therapy

Therapy for Addiction

Everyone is different and there is no one size fits method to therapy. While my personal approach is unique to each client, I have a wealth of experience in multiple styles of therapy and am willing to be flexible to meet each client's needs.

Therapy for Addiction

Dialectical Behavioral Informed Therapy

Therapy for Addiction

The treatment of substance abuse and addiction is usually multifaceted. I have vast experience consulting to help clients determine an appropriate level of treatment. I have helped facilitate the enrollment of hundreds of people into higher levels of care where needed. I can help clients build their own individual  recovery programs, and provide the individual therapy component for clients dedicated to their sobriety.

Dialectical Behavioral Informed Therapy

For individuals struggling with personality issues, treatment resistant anxiety or depression, self-harm, or other maladaptive behaviors, dialectical behavioral therapy is an effective, evidenced based treatment.  While I'm not able to provide formal DBT (which requires a group in addition to individual therapy) I frequently draw on DBT tools with a broad range of clients.

Motivational Interviewing

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Dialectical Behavioral Informed Therapy

Particularly effective for clients working on addictions or changing difficult habits, motivational interviewing is an evidence based technique that is a collaborative, goal oriented style of communication designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to behavior change.

Provider Wellness

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

For six years I served on the Provider Wellness Committee at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.  For the last two years, I was the chair.  I helped guide many providers back into clinical work after medical leave due to mental health, substance abuse, or physical health issues.  I worked with credentialing committees, licensing boards, and hospital leaders to help providers safely return to their duties. If you are a provider who has had issues with a license, I can help.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is another evidenced based treatment approach with demonstrated effectiveness for a variety of mood and anxiety disorders.  By focusing on thought patterns and changing irrational/unhelpful thoughts, we can work towards feeling better about ourselves and our lives.  Are you mired in negative thinking?  Do you struggle to believe in yourself or your worth?  Let's talk about it.

Parent Coaching

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic Therapy

Teens are struggling more than ever in our social-media obsessed culture, and parents are struggling to navigate relationships with their children in this new world.  I have helped parents learn to engage better with children coping with substance use or abuse, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and autism spectrum disorders.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Among the oldest forms of therapy, psychodynamic approaches focus on relationship patterns, uncovering stuck points, and working through internal conflicts which may have deep roots in our past. Understanding and actively changing these patterns can lead to improved psychological health.

Couples Therapy

Couples Therapy

My approach to working with couples is based upon establishing open and honest communication. I frequently use principles rooted in DBT therapy, fostering mindfulness and presence to help  partners re-establish trust and gain greater empathy and awareness of eachother.
